Dock of the Bay Marina carries everything and anything you may have forgot for your boat trip. Conveniently located in Kitty Hawk Bay, the marina is a must-stop before your sailing excursion.

The shop at the marina has a full supply of whatever last minute goods you need or want for your day on the boat. They carry food for you to pack for a lunch in the sound. You can grab sandwiches, sodas, chips, and pre-packaged snacks to satisfy any grumbling tummies on the water. If you are planning an adult trip, they carry a full supply of wine, beer, and ice. Stock your cooler and have a relaxing glass of wine on the boat! They even have coolers if you forgot your own.

Going on a fishing adventure? Dock of the Bay Marina can supply you with appropriate fishing bait and tackle before you set of to sea. The Marina also has a collection of picnic tables, if you want to eat before you get out on the water. Clean restrooms are also available during open hours, so make sure to make a pit stop before you get on that boat! 

The Marina has a number of boat ramps located throughout the Outer Banks. From Kitty Hawk to Manteo you can find yourself a public boat ramp to dock your vessel. You can count on the Marina for a friendly helpful hand during your excursion. They can update you on the weather, directions for your adventure and answer any other questions you may have. Vacationers will notice a handful of sailboats at every local Outer Banks port, either saddled up to the docks or breezing across the harbor, en route to the nearest sound for a cruise, or to the continent-spanning Intracoastal Waterway to continue a long coastal voyage. Some vacationers are even in it for the long haul, docking for a summer or a winter season at a number of local marinas that offer all the comforts of home. Clearly, sailing lovers of all varieties have plenty of options, but even newcomers to the sport can experiment with life on the water with a local sailing lesson, rental, or waterfront cruise.

Belinda Pleva grew up serving ice cream out of her parent’s shop. She loved being part of what she calls “a happy business.” “I love it when people come into the shop and you hand them something, and it makes them smile,” Pleva says. “That moment when you hand an ice cream cone over to a little kid and their eyes just light up. That’s what I love about the ice cream business.”

 

In 1994, Pleva opened up her own ice cream and chocolate shop, Big Buck’s Ice Cream, in the brand-new Timbuk II Shopping Center in Corolla. Business was good, but something was missing.

 

“I was never satisfied with the ingredients in the ice creams and chocolates you could purchase back then. I wanted to serve my customers delicious flavors with ingredients they could actually pronounce,” Pleva says.

 

Pleva took a trip to Italy to study the gelaterias. She fell in love with the incredible flavors, and when she returned home to the Outer Banks, she began working tirelessly to perfect the flavors in her own ice cream.

 

Big Buck’s homemade ice cream combined the flavors of the Italian gelaterias and the richness of American ice cream. It quickly became a tourist favorite. After having the same unsatisfactory experience with the readymade chocolates she was selling, she also took a trip to Brussels to learn more about making handmade chocolates. Pleva brought the chocolate-making experience right back with her, and the result was the finest quality of chocolates on the Outer Banks.

 

After her huge success in the Corolla shop, Pleva was able to open up three more shops—one in Kitty Hawk, one in Manteo and one in Duck.
