Booking the best vacation property experience:
Getting the best rental home value:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking in the Fall or Spring is one of our best tips for saving money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
- Booking websites frequently offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for more information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitor guides contain discounts for local tours and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Select vacation dates and max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group needs. Relaxing stay by the beach at Barrier Island Station has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Kitty Hawk rental home search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the host before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out which bed configuration is right for your vacation group.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly rental. Get specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, hosts charge additional pet fees.
- Visiting for a single attraction? Use a map search to locate nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
Tips to have a terrific stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents quite a few concerns.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- During arrival, record any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- At departure, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your group have a terrific vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was terrific, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
