Incredible vistas from multi-level decks and convenient 250-foot walk to the beach are just a few of the highlights of Mermaid’s Den, a well-appointed family friendly two-bedroom condo located in the Sea Dunes community in the heart of Kitty Hawk. The community itself features a pool, hot tub, tennis and racquetball courts and exercise room each exclusively for use by the guests in this appealing little neighborhood. The comfortable interior meticulously decorated with bright beach decor offers a unique layout not found in many of our condos utilizing all three levels of living space. Upstairs you will find an open living space with connecting kitchen, dining and living room and half bathroom. The living room comes equipped with a sizable flat screen TV with full cable package, DVD player. This all leads out to a sun deck outfitted with high end polywood furnishings and marvelous vistas of one of our most legendary surf breaks called Laundromats. On the second level you find the main sleeping quarters with two bedrooms both of which are en suites with flatscreen TVs and cable. First up you have the versatile pyramid bunk room, double on the bottom twin up top with another twin trundle underneath. The rear bedroom provides a king-sized bed and access to a private shaded deck also with vistas of the Atlantic, providing a peaceful spot to read a book with the backdrop of crashing waves. Downstairs a finished garage provides ample storage for your beach gear, a cabana shower, washer, dryer and even an additional refrigerator.

Mermaid’s Den’s proximity to a local surfing hot spot makes for an ideal location for some, but the beach and surrounding areas provides simple access to eateries, shopping and just those looking for a beach day with the kids. Just to the south, you'll find a lifeguarded beach manned each day from Memorial Day to the end of September. For food and entertainment, two of the only oceanfront eateries/bars and local hot spots, Black Pelican and Hurricane Moe’s, are effortlessly walkable from Mermaid’s Den. Less than a mile away are Captain Frank’s and John’s Drive In, one famed for hot dogs and the other milk shakes. When we say this conveniently located condo at milepost 4.25 is in the heart of Kitty Hawk, it really is the epicenter of our little beach town. Imagine what you will find if you venture out a little further?

The reputation of the Outer Banks was constructed on smaller economical family vacations. In today’s age where bigger is better it’s become hard for families to find the ideal private vacation spot without sacrificing the creature amenities we have all become accustomed to.

Please note this home does not include bed linens and towels, however, an optional package can be purchased for an additional charge.

The community pool dates are 05/17/25-10/13/25. Pool dates are subject to change based on the HOA.

Fireplace is not for guest use.

Ground Level: Garage/storage area with gas grille, washer and dryer as well as additional full-sized refrigerator. Cabana shower. Flat screen TV with cable.

Mid Level: King en suite with flat screen TV and direct access to private shaded deck with ocean vistas. En suite with a pyramid bunk (twin on top/double on bottom) and additional twin trundle bed with TV.

Top Level: Open floor plan with connecting kitchen, living and dining areas. Living area leads out to sun deck with ocean vistas.

About the Area

Located in Kitty Hawk, this vacation home is by the sea. Glazin' Go-Nuts and Wright Brothers National Memorial are cultural highlights, and travelers looking to shop may want to visit Scarborough Lane Shoppes and Outer Banks Mall. Children at Play Museum and Paradise Fun Park are also worth visiting.

Tricks and tips to get the best Kitty Hawk vacation property experience:

Sticking to a spending budget:

  • June, July, and August are high season in the Kitty Hawk area. Booking in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local Kitty Hawk area magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines have discounts for local tours, shops, and attractions.

Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Does your group require specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Add the property manager's information to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Upon arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peace. Apply the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
